Cornelia Funke

Cornelia Caroline Funke was born December 10, 1958, in Dorsten, North Rhine-Westphalia. She is a multiple award-winning German author of children's fiction. Funke is best known for her Inkworld trilogy, with the English translation of the third book, Inkdeath, released on October 6, 2008. The Inkworld books have gained a variety of attention, and critics have praised Funke as the "German J. K. Rowling" Her books are very popular in her native country, and many have now been translated into English. Her work fits mainly into the fantasy and adventure genres. She currently lives in Los Angeles, California.Cornelia Funke was born in 1958 in the German town of Dorsten to Karl-Heinz and Helmi Funke. As a child, she wanted to become an astronaut and or a pilot, but then decided to study pedagogy at the University of Hamburg. After finishing her studies, Funke worked for three years as a social worker, focusing on children with a deprived background. She had a stint illustrating books, but soon began writing her own stories, inspired by the sorts of stories that had appealed to the deprived children she had worked with. During the late 1980s and the 1990s, Funke established herself in Germany with two children's series, namely the fantasy-oriented Gespensterjäger (Ghosthunters) and the Wilde Hühner (Wild Chicks) line of books. Her international breakthrough came with the fantasy novel Dragon Rider (1996), which stayed on the New York Times bestseller list for 78 weeks, and was continued with The Thief Lord (2000, translated into English in 2002), which immediately climbed to the #2 position of the New York Times bestseller list, stayed there for 19 weeks and sold 1.5 million copies. Her follow-up novel was Inkheart (2003), which won the 2004 BookSense Book of the Year Children's Literature award Inkheart was the first part of a trilogy which was continued with Inkspell (2005), which won Funke her second BookSense Book of the Year Children's Literature award (2006). As a testament to her growing importance, Time magazine listed Funke as one of the "100 most influential people of 2005", calling her the "German J. K. Rowling" and praised her work as a mix of "(underrated) prose, moody, unpredictable characters and the instinctive feel of her plots, which are happily devoid of emotional manipulation". Eoin Colfer

Eoin Colfer (born: 14 May 1965) is an Irish author of children's books and a comedian. He is most famous as the author of the Artemis Fowl series, but he has also achieved success with other books. His novels have been compared to those of J. K. Rowling, and like Harry Potter, Artemis Fowl is used as a reference to describe the work of other writers e.g. Jack Heath and Mark Walden. In September, 2008, Colfer was commissioned to write the sixth installment of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series, entitled And Another Thing....

Eoin Colfer (pronounced "Owen" Colfer) was born in Wexford, Ireland. He attained worldwide notice in 2002, when his first Artemis Fowl book was published. He then became a New York Times best-selling author of books for children and teens, known for writing the Artemis Fowl series, Half Moon Investigations, and The Supernaturalist, along with the Eoin Colfer’s The Legend of... books. In January 2008, Colfer published a book titled Airman, which was a New York Times bestseller.

Colfer currently resides in Wexford, Ireland with his wife, Jackie, and two children, Seán and Finn.

Roland Smith

Roland Smith (b. November 30, 1951 in Portland, Oregon) is an American author of young adult fiction as well as nonfiction books for children.

Smith graduated from Portland State University and, following a part-time job at the Oregon Zoo in Portland, began a 20-year career as a zookeeper, both at the Oregon Zoo and the Point Defiance Zoo in Tacoma, Washington. After working to save wildlife following the Exxon Valdez oil spill, in 1990, he published his first book, Sea Otter Rescue, a non-fiction account of the process of animal rescue. Smith continued to draw upon his zoo experiences for other non-fiction titles, including Journey of the Red Wolf, which won an Oregon Book Award in 1996.

In 1997, Smith published his first novel, Thunder Cave. The book continues Smith's animal themes, as teenage protagonist Jacob Lansa follows his biologist father to Africa where the father is researching elephants. The Lansa character also appears in 1999's Jaguar and 2001's The Last Lobo.

Other novels by Smith include The Captain's Dog: My Journey with the Lewis and Clark Tribe, Zach's Lie, Cryptid Hunters, and his most recent, Peak, the story of a teenage boy obsessed with climbing mountains. Smith's books have won "Book of the Year" awards in Colorado, Nevada, South Carolina, and Florida, as well as in his native Oregon.

He lives in Tualatin, Oregon with his wife and stepchildren.
